Google Taking On Netflix With More Streaming Movies

Media_httpstaticbusin_bsfze
Google is negotiating with movie studios to expand its movie-streaming service beyond the current crop of second-tier titles, according to Michael Arrington at TechCrunch. The move would put Google into more direct competition with Netflix, which launched its own streaming-only service in November. The deals are being led by former Netflix executive Robert Kynci and will eventually tie in with Google TV. Earlier this month, Google acquired Widevine, a company specializing in online distribution and digital rights management for movies, and that acquisition could be used to power the improved service. 4 Small Biz Marketing Mistakes

Small businesses may seem to be likely casualties of the recession, but, according to a recent FedEx poll, their owners are remaining optimistic. In fact, 72% of the small business owners polled in the shipping giant’s Signs of the Times small business survey said they will be the driving force behind the U.S. economic recovery in 2010. Additionally, 42% of those polled said they were planning on spending more money on marketing and sales initiatives this year.

Since saving the nation’s economy is a tall, albeit admirable order, MainStreet thought we would help by pointing out the common ways in which small businesses mismanage their marketing money.

Spending the Entire Marketing Budget on Week One

More often than not, small businesses will pour tons of startup capital into their marketing campaigns at launch. While there’s logic to this (how will you attract customers if no one knows you’re out there?), business owners who spend their entire marketing budget on a launch set themselves up to fail in the long run.  Why? Because marketing is a never-ending process. You can’t stop advertising once the money runs it.  Well, you can, but that would be a waste of the capital you spent.

“People see and receive so much advertising that the one-time marketing tactic is no longer effective,” Peter Geisheker, CEO of The Geisheker Group Marketing firm, explains. “A prospective customer may need to see your advertisement seven to twelve times or more over a period of several months or even a year before they will buy from you.”

Additionally, once you get them in the door, you’ll have to work to keep them there. Take giant chains, like Wal-Mart or McDonald’s as examples, who have already established brand loyalty, but haven’t ceased all ad campaigns.  They know that marketing is not a one-off; out of sight means out of mind. Of course, small businesses don’t generate the cash flow that giant corporations do (if they did, they would no longer be a small business, would they?). However, small establishments can afford protracted advertising. They just need to identify their target audience.

It's a great time to start a small business. Here are 4 mistakes to avoid in your marketing

ThirdCousinMedia: Difference in Quality

Tcm_signature

There is a trend in web video to "shoot with what you have" even if it is a low quality Flip or Web Cam. While I agree with that to an extent,NOTHING trumps quality to help convey your message. Look at these two videos shot under similar conditions. Neither had any additional lighting. Pay attention to not only the images BUT also the difference in AUDIO. FYI - Audio is MORE important than video...(More on that later!)

Webcam on MacBook laptop - $80 (Estimated price...It was built in to a $1000 laptop)

Cliff Mack's Canon 7D - $1800

To be fair there was a little less light on for the webcam because it was shot earlier in the day. The 7D provides full HD and the footage looks excellent BUT the cost puts it out of reach for someone who may just be starting out.

The question becomes what impression do you want to make? What field are you in? For me, I tend to go with the quality because my work is view differently because I provide video services. Either one will help you get your point across! What do you think?

Entrepreneur Mindset: Desire!

Last night Shuronda Robinson taught from the Think and Grow Rich series. This class was about DESIRE. It is the first step in success! She covered some powerful stuff and I was not sure if the class knew she was going to jump right in so fast! The question was "How do you know if your WANT has become your DESIRE?"

The answer was what we were all there to find out! Check out the pictures from the session!

Can I See Your License?

A few weeks ago I was at Taco Cabana in Dallas ready a book while I was getting a oil change at the Wal Mart across the parking lot. I looked up and seen two motorcycle cops pull up. Although I had not done anything, I always get a little nervous when the police show up. They order their food and in a almost empty diner, they sat at the table next to me. I looked over and read the patch on their jackets. It said "North Texas Motorcade". Wait a minute, I thought: These guys were not police officers. I was very curious as to what who they were. I mean their bikes and uniforms looked so official. I asked one of them, "What do you guys do". He responded "We are professional motorcade escorts". He went on to explain that they do everything that the police force would do while escorting a funeral procession, dignatary or rock star. I thought that was a very interesting business model. I asked why would someone use them rather than the Dallas Police Department. "Sometimes the police department does not have the manpower to meet the demand". He also said since this all they do, they are better at it. Police are well trained in areas of protection and not necessarily escorting. I asked "How do you get new business?" He said they marketing to funeral homes, and concert promotion companies. They also get plenty of referral business. I am a huge fan of business models. I love hearing about creative ways that people earn a living. The fact that a person can look at a market and see opportunity excites me. I may have thought I was crazy when I asked could I take pictures of them on their motorcycles! That is the best thing about our country. You CAN come up with a idea and execute it. They are unlimited ways to make a living. I am dismayed when I hear people say there are no opportunities available today. They blame the economy for everything. The truth is, if you desire to earn money or create a business, you can. All you have to do is look at situation and figure out how you can benefit from it and then move in it. I would have never thought there was a market for a motorcade company that was not part of the police force of a city. It goes to show you, there are millions of ways to earn a living today!

Third Cousins Media: Entrepreneur Mindset Meeting

Last night we had the second Entrepreneur Mindset interest meeting at Hoover's Cooking in Austin. When the final RSVP's came in, we had 15 people register. A Central Texas storm rolled in about an hour before the meeting. I assumed some people would not want to brave Austin traffic in the rain. Much to my surprise, we had 22 people show up. That tells me the entrepreneur spirit is alive in Austin. In this meeting we covered how to attract business using Facebook. The feedback was great. The 2 hour meeting went almost 4 hours because no one wanted to leave. I believe we have the makings of a strong group. One of the main themes was how can new and seasoned entrepreneurs come together to support each other in personal and business matters. Here are some pictures from the meeting and from the radio station, KAZI. Steve Savage invited me to be a guest host on his long running talk show, "Juice and Jam"

The pictures are courtesy of Hope Green. We met at the radio station that day!!
